Dear Caryn,
I've read that evening gloves are back in style for ultra formal
events. I have a beautiful Audrey Hepburn type black formal dress
and I would love to wear opera length gloves. Exactly what is
the etiquette for wearing gloves, do you take them off to eat,
etc., can you wear them all evening?
Thank You
Kelly
Dear Kelly,
Strictly speaking you should remove evening gloves before you
eat. You may remove the right one during cocktails for ease of
eating hors d' oeuvres and beverages, otherwise it is perfectly
acceptable to keep gloves on all evening, why ruin the look!
For affordable and elegant evening gloves go to John Lewis,
they have a brilliant selection of colours, lengths and fabrics
to choose from.
I just got a great pair of knee high chocolate brown
boots and want to know how to wear them with jeans. I once saw
a picture where a girl was wearing jeans with knee high boots
and she cuffed the jeans with a very exaggerated cuff about 10-12
inches long, but can not find the picture again. Do you have any
ideas?
Nicole
Dear Nicole,
It sound like the lady in the picture will have turned up a pair
of cropped jeans herself, and possibly loosley sewn the hem into
place.
Alternatively; for a sleeker look, invest in a pair of drainpipe
or straight leg jeans, Fornariner (currently available at House
of Fraser) have some great ones. Cheaper versions can be found
at H&M and Topshop. Simply wear your jeans tucked into your
boots for one of the best looks this winter.
Hello Caryn,
I am looking for a special dress for a Christmas party this year
and I was wondering if you know where I might find one or if you
have seen one? I am 5 foot 9 inches in height and size 12-14 and
I looking for a knee length or just above dress that would flatter
a curvey figure.
I would be grateful if you could help me out,
Thanks
Rhonda
Dear Rhonda,
I find one of the best places on the high street for party dresses
is Monsoon, they have a lovely cut and just the right amount of
sparkle to add glitz and glamour to any special occasion. Oasis,
Warehouse and Kookai also traditionally come up trumps for their
Christmas collections and are definitely worth a look. Go to our
howtolookgood directory for links to their websites and stores
nearest to you.
Hi i am looking for a pair of thigh high boots similar
to the ones Victoria Beckham/Alex Curran have been wearing! do
you know of any high street shops stocking similar ones?
thanks
Hi,
The boots you have seen are by designer Stella McCartney, I haven't
seen any equivalents on the high street yet, however, Office do
have some black point over the knee boots, they are fairly loose
over the knee as opposed to the tight fitting lace detail on Stella
McCartney's, although I think they are good alternative.
Hi, please help me soon as this ball I am attending
is at the end of the month. I have purchased a Flapper dress which
has a cream coloured underslip and cream ruffles at the bottom.
The upper part is a white cotton lace. I am not sure what to put
with it. I would like to wear a headband but can't seem to find
one that works with the softness of the dress or the colour. Suggestions
on shoe colours would be great too. In other words, I want to
put a great outfit together but can't seem to get my thoughts
around the right acessories.
Please help!
Thank you,
Sandi
Dear Sandi,
Some cream/white tights with round toed heels or t-bar style shoes
in either gold, bronze or silver would look great with your lace
flapper dress. Most of the high street stores should have something,
New Look have actually got some glitter round toed heels in blue,
silver or gold which would look great. For head bands look in
TopShop or Claire's Accessories, or better still, nip to your
local haberdashery and get some ribbon to make your own, use some
kirby grips to keep in place and you can get a head band in any
colour you like.
Dear Caryn,
My boyfriend wants me to wear seamed stockings at a dinner I am
attending with him. I would be happy to do this (I frequently
wear ordinary stockings) but am worried that as they are presently
not in fashion, they will appear tarty. If I do wear them, should
I go for the ordinary seamed item or the ones with the reinforced
heel?
Also, do you have any tips for keeping evening dress
spaghetti straps on my somewhat sloping shoulders. I am fairly
large busted and cannot go completely strapless.
Many thanks,
Heather
Dear Heather,
Seamed stockings are a style classic and will always look chic,
either option you mentioned would be fine.
As for spaghetti straps, if they are slipping off your shoulders
have them shortened slightly. This is extremely easy to do yourself,
get a friend to pin them at the back where they already join your
dress and just sew them securely into place.
Caryn,
Hi. I have a cream corduroy pencil skirt and don't know the color
or style of shoes to wear with it. Do you have any suggestions.
Thank you
Bonnie
Dear Bonnie,
Some round toed flat pumps would look great with your pencil skirt,
TopShop, Faith and Offica all have good ones. French Sole are
slightly more expensive but have some gorgeous patent and patterened
styles.

Mall on my howtolookgood site.
Hi
I want to buy a pair of long winter boots which I can wear with
my jeans tucked in. But I have big calf muscles and can not find
any that fit. I have heard there is a shop or website that specialises
in boots for girls like me - do you know it?
Thanks in advance.
Marianne.
Dear Marianne
A fab mail order company called Duo will be able to help you with
this. Specialising in calf fitting boots they offer over 20 different
widths in sizes 2 to 10 with loads of great designs to choose
from, plus they are the same price as many high street sold boots
with prices starting from £90.
Go to the Shopping Mall

hi i'm looking for some jeans to fit a pear shape figure.
I want a really nice pair of jeans to wear out with a glamorous
top. I'm 5" 4' a size 10 on top and a 12 on the bottom. Can
you recommend any brands of jeans that suit the larger bottom!
Hi,
Both Gap and TopShop are great for pear shaped ladies and should
be able to help you out. Jeans can be nightmare so a good tip
is to ear mark a full day to spend trying on lots of different
pairs, TopShop for example have tons of different styles to choose
from, also once you find a style that fits well buy a few of pairs
in different shades just in case the shop discontinues the line.
Do let me know how you get on, its always great to get feed
back.
Happy shopping!
I have a terrible time finding pants that fit my very
thin thighs (which I can't do anything about) that don't cut into
my hips. Are there any pants anywhere that are thin in the thigh
area and then expand outward to fit on the hips?
Jessica
Dear Jessica,
Unfortunately I don't. The only thing I can recommend is steering
away from the tight pant look and try wearing a wide leg a la
Jennifer Aniston and Kate Beckinsale. This style of pant looks
great in linen and cotton and creates a very flattering silhouette,
especially if your legs are on the thinner side. The only other
alternative is to buy pants with a slight amount of lycra (and
therefore stretch) in the fabric.
I do hope this helps Jessica.
Hi Caryn
Please can you tell me where to find shoes or boots for a fashion
conscious teenager with wide feet around the EE/EEE depending
on the fit of the shoe. Everything I have found so far is too
old fashioned.
many thanks
Juliana
Dear Victoria,
The first place I'd like to recommend is a fantastic British website
called Plus in Boots who specialise in sourcing gorgeous wide
fitting boots and shoes at good prices. They have a really comprehensive
sizing chart to ensure you choose the right fitting shoe for you
and are fast becoming a god send for wide fitting women.
For shoes in particular; a great place to try is a semi bespoke
company called Selve. They digitally measure your foot -which
would involve an initial trip to their shoe lounge in central
London, however this will ensure you have a perfect fit - they
then make a shoe to your specifications in style, fabric and colour.
They keep your details on their data base so you can make future
orders without even leaving the comfort of your own home. Prices
start from around £100, the quality is great and you have
the freedom to get a personally individualised pair of shoes every
time you buy!
Have a look at the Shopping Mall
on my howtolookgood site for more details on Plus in Boots and
Selve and how to contact them.
