It’s been a while since I wrote the last body shape workshop I notice. So time to brush up your styling skills.
I’m wondering whether you look at clothes and assess their abilities to flatter your shape as I do, or whether you just plain fall in love with something on the hangar.
But wait, you get it into the changing room and it doesn’t work for you but you don’t really know why.
Here’s a rather marvellous dress I made earlier…no really it’s part of my collection for you know who.
I’m not trying to sell you the dress though; I am merely going to talk about the merits of this garment.
The central frill effect
Yes it’s a maxi dress, I know you know that!
What I’m homing in on is the central frill, which creates a streamlining effect through the centre of the body. And what does that do? Well heaps actually!
See how the wide v-neckline finishes at a point at the breast taking the eye to the centre of the body and then down. All I see when I look at that dress is the small frill through the middle – well that’s how others will read your clothes and indeed your body.
Because there is only a black surround, around the nether regions, there is nothing to see. Hips and thighs just disappear don’t they?
And where does the frill take the eye to next? Well I’m thinking all that interesting print and more frill at the bottom of the garment.
This ticks all the boxes for me of a great dress that is actually working hard on behalf of your curves to create a streamlined effect.
This is actually how we stylists talk all the time about clothes and that’s why we understand proportions in the way we do.
Actually this has got me all excited because I’m now working on spring and summer for 2009 and that frill is tooo good to leave behind.
Note to self: central frill panels on your special occassionwear, get your pen now Caryn.
