In my job there are lots of live shows to do for an audience. Actually I love getting up on stage and seeing a sea of happy expectant faces.
I’ve just completed three days of shows at Olympia for the National Wedding Show. It’s a makeover of course it is, but as they go this one is great value for money, even if I do say so myself.
On stage with me is Ariane Poole (one of my favourite make up artists check out her concealer from www.arianepoole.com I promise you will never use anything else again). Ariane regularly does Catherine Zeta, Uma and Penelope (Cruz) and when we’re on stage she does brides.
We pluck these delicious maidens out of the audience in jeans and t-shirts and off we go. Errol Douglas (youngest hairdresser to receive and M.B.E is up there with us and he does the most spectacular hair in nano seconds.
Fresh flowers nestled amongst curls always get me going, Jane takes our bride backstage and gets her dressed in full gown, veil, bouquet and wow.
When our bride returns to the stage the ooh and ahh factor is huge. I’ve seen members of the audience weep and I need a tissue from time to time. Actually I’m not joking and especially if our bride gets emotional at the mirror I’m a wreck!
In fact it’s one of the jobs where I regularly embarrass myself on stage because I’m a softie for a happy ending. But you always get more than you bargain for in a live show.
One particular show we did was for the hit British feature film Confetti, where I played myself and we ran the show as normal but all the cast were our audience. I looked at my front row to see several well-known British actors including the marvellous Alison Steadman; meanwhile we were making over the main actress for the filming of. It was a very strange experience, when she cried at the mirror; I nearly broke out the Kleenex myself until I reminded myself that she was just pretending.
We pulled out a woman another time for our make-over and gave her the full works and when I asked her ‘how she had been proposed to,’ she looked at me rather strangely and said, ‘oh no I’m not getting married, I don’t have a boyfriend I just fancied a make-over.’ Needless to say we have changed the way we do business now.
But hey this is easily one of my favourite jobs. I’m telling you because we have just started our annual tour. And in a few weeks we’ll be at the Birmingham N.E.C. then we return in the autumn to Earls Court and again back to Birmingham N.E.C you can find out more details from www.nationalweddingshow.co.uk
Why don’t you come and visit and if you are a bride to be we can give you a make-over too…
