I am often asked to comment on models, their unhealthy shapes and their influence on us. I have been a patron of the Eating Disorders Association now known as BEAT for well over 12 years and for even longer I have been critical of my industry’s penchant for willowy types as one standardized ideal of femininity.
The fashion industry and fashion magazines generally do prioritise thin women to sell clothes and while most of us will put up with it (if you would like me to explain why it is so then leave a comment), we get really verbal when the women are too thin.
That’s why on How to Look Good, we address the issue of what it’s like to have an ordinary body. In “Ask Caryn” I answer as many questions as I can on body shape. I also offer clothing solutions in our monthly update pages as well. In these stories, we insist on featuring pictures that have used healthy looking women and where we can we prioritise curvy models.
But there are precious few images. So when I see a gorgeous woman on the catwalk of lavish proportions, I just love to share.
This is the lovely Elizabeth who is now modelling for 12+ UK Model Management and who recently appeared on the catwalk at London Fashion week. She is wearing designs by Chelsey Oliver currently studying at The London College of Fashion. Jane tells me that she was a contributor on How to Look Good Naked, who looked so good after her image overhaul that the professional models were urging her to join their industry. I’m just loving her and her look.
My point to you is this. I get so many letters from women who are under confident because they feel their bodies are too large when they compare them to the pictures in magazines, perhaps you sometimes feel the same. But if we saw more variety in beauty and size it would be a healing thing. Enjoy.
