There is high and there’s really high when it comes to heels. I’m talking about the sort where you practically need a pilot’s licence to stay in the air.
At London Fashion Week, I’m thinking there is only one style and it comes with a health warning!
I’m not saying these adorable designs don’t look great as a piece of sculpture, but let’s take Nicholas Kirkwood, current darling of the forward thinking footwear lovers.
His current collection (here’s a pic I took earlier) will influence your spring summer styles 09 no question! He is rightly expected to become a household name in the next few seasons and your favourite stores have already faithfully reproduced his cut-away heels from last season.
And that’s what London Fashion week is all about – inspiration for us all with practical and price friendly considerations thrown in further down the production line.
But spare a thought for the poor models that must stay upright. Last night at one show, I was enjoying visions of beautiful maidens and marvelling at their 6’6” physiques when one, in the shoes pictured here, came crashing down making the famous Naomi Campbell fall (in Vivienne Westwood platforms) look like a small stumble.
( I took this picture moments before said incident thinking at the time that it was a visit to casualty just waiting to happen)!
I have been backstage when models have been presented with their footwear only to hear the angry groans and protests and I’m with them – whatever they get paid it’s not enough to cover the pain and humiliation of going down in front of 50 or so photographers and hundreds of fashion journos.
Not to mention the resultant injury.
But the show must go on… and it does. And I’m beginning to see a theme emerging! Tan or gold chunky and strappy platforms are clearly going to be an item. You and I however will not be walking so tall and I’m all for that!
