It’s been a busy week actually. I meant to post yesterday but ended up fitting in a quick comment on Michelle Obama’s outfit to visit the Queen for the New York Daily News…. love her if you are wondering and her taste is impeccable. I only wish our own first lady would take some styling advice…Now there’s an idea!
But let’s talk Body Gossip. I’m giving you good warning of an event that I’m sure will make the stage in the West End. It’s about bodies and it’s been initiated by Ruth Rogers who created a national writing competition resulting in the works being read out loud by actors.
This is Donna Leigh Bailey from ‘Doctors,’ performing ‘Being Visible,’ by Lisa Parry, other readers were Anne Diamond, Natalie Cassidy from Eastenders and children’s TV presenter Cerrie Burnell – who caused quite a furore recently – apparently some parents thought her appearance scary for their children because she was born with only one arm.
Much like the Vagina Monologues these are short stories written by women and men about their relationships with their bodies, exposing the painful truth about striving to conform to an unattainable perfection.
I wrote in my newsletter that I was asked to perform one of the readings myself by organiser and creator of the event Ruth, and it is my regret that I didn’t, owing to a lack of confidence in the performing department – I know my limitations!
But nice one to those who did! It was an important awareness and fundraising evening in association with Beat (formally the eating disorders association).
I’ll stick with my strengths, which are, as most of you know by now, campaigning for a space for us all to celebrate who we are and what we can be to ourselves and others without the fashion world’s ‘trend frenzy,’ to distract us.
Yes it is all about discovering how clothes with the right features can provide the tools to create your body confidence. Knowing what to wear and what not to wear to flatter your wonderful body whatever it’s shape will always help.

Miklya Dodd is in fact an actress from Hollyoaks. I imagine the disabled TV presenter you mention is Cerrie Burnell. It sounds like a great event.

By the way Miklya was there too and did a brilliant piece about chocolate eclairs! I heard also from Ruth that there have been more talks about this even going national!

That’s right! I have meetings this week about making Body Gossip extremely big indeed.
Which is very exciting.
Thanks Caryn for blogging about BG – and I hope everyone who reads it will submit their story to the competition: http://www.bodygossip.org/competition.
