This season saw fashion react to the biggest issue facing the world right now, the global economic crisis. The recession influenced almost every designer.
Some took the opportunity to plunder their archives and produce masterpiece collections of house classics guaranteed to wow (and sell.) Others went hyper creative. Why not throw caution to the wind and design with your heart, not your business head?
There were those who where also wistful for happier times, in particular Marc Jacobs in New York, whose collection paid homage the excessive 80’s fashion trends of New York city - where his career first began.

Whatever the inspiration, at the resulting fashion shows there was a catalogue of new looks. There were elegant catwalk trends in the form of demure 1940s pencil skirts and the return of the skirt suit, to the new glamour of 80’s fashion infused party pieces for the festive season.
For modernists, clean lines were still on the fashion radar, with sharp shoulders and scaffold like tailoring proving last season’s futuristic catwalk trend endured. And for those who can’t wait to wrap up for winter, there were also plenty of chunky knits drapey fabrics and rich velvets to get cosy in.
In other words, catwalk fashion for everyone.
Though amongst the vast choice, there was one single, clear message from the collections. What ever you choose to buy now, invest wisely and winter’s new key pieces (and there are plenty) will work hard in your wardrobe all season long.
