This summer, many designers have fallen in love with a
life on the ocean wave. It’s a traditional summer theme that
receives a certain amount of reworking each season to produce trendy
womens clothing and accessories. Some designers plundered the closets
of pirates and sailors to inspire their summer collections, others
navigated the more glamorous shores of a 70’s St. Tropez.

At Balenciaga, now one of the worlds
most influential design houses since Nicholas Ghesquerie took the
helm, gold buttons and braids were used to finish nifty cropped
naval jackets.
(The cropped jacket is fast emerging as the jacket of the season
and is the perfect accompaniment to a tiered skirt or sailor pant.)
Sailor pants were easy and fluid in navy satin and pretty chiffon
tops were printed with chevrons.
The overall look was loose, relaxed and a more masculine view
on the season which is welcome amongst a sea of girlie ‘boho’
frocks.

At Sonia Rykiel
a ‘Parisian pirates of the Caribbean’ theme was played
out in her show titled ‘legend’.
Gypsy pirate models swaggered in hip swaying skirts, striped pirate
sweaters and enormous floppy hats. Tops were strewn with gold coins
and other treasures came in the form of mother of pearl bangles
and crystal-studded belts.
|
At Chloe loose
layers in nautical navy and blue looked breezy and casual as captain
of design, Phoebe Philo effortlessly navigated this label to a new
level.
There was a cool simplicity to the cropped military jackets that
rode on the hip of washed silk skirts and the most flattering of
white wide sailor pants with silk ruffled shirts.
Effortless white sun dresses with navy trims will be sartorial
bread and butter for Chloe girls from dawn to dusk this summer.

At Matthew Williamson,
loyal fans that include Kelis, Helena Christianson and Cat Deeley,
were not disappointed. Against a tropical sunset backdrop, his signature
modern ‘boho’ style took on a nautical tilt in a collection
titled ‘beyond the horizon’.
Again we saw an emphasis on the waist and the cropped tailored
jacket, which this time came in navy sailor stripes. Other nautical
references were beaded rope trims on sexy vests, sailor style tattoos
as motifs and scarves worn Sinbad style as sashes. (Use last season’s
vintage sequinned scarves as belts).
For evening shipmates became glam 70’s St Tropez starlets
swathed in silver silk, lame and cute metallic star prints.
