Modern Sport
Many designers gave their collections a sporty slant for
spring, mixing hi-tech fabrics with loose easy shapes to create
a modern casual theme that is sophisticated and chic. Femininity
comes from blouson billowing sleeves, sexy cut vests and breezy
easy dresses. Layered deluxe fabrics add polish and sophisticated
colour combinations balance navy, grey and brown, or nude with flashes
of neon.

At Marni signature
edge-to-edge coats and breezy summer dresses looked easy and cool
when reined in with a modern minimal belt then layered with sexy
jersey vests and cropped leggings. Layering was important but looked
clean and simple, as fussy details or embellishments took a back
seat to simple modern finishes and concealed zips or pockets.

At Dries van Noten
in Paris the best example of the new sporty look was seen. One after
another models appeared in effortlessly chic casual outfits, beautifully
put together and all featuring must have items: from high wedge
sneakers to shiny cropped bombers and tuxedo pants with side piping.

Dries Van Noten
This was a sporty look without a whiff of a velour tracksuit,
where casual and formal were effortlessly married and army surplus
shapes mixed easily with sequins and sparkle. Achieving the right
balance of practicality and informality, yet still feeling chic
and groomed is what most of us want these days and is why collections
such as this will be influential on the high street next year.
The jacket is hugely important to the new sport look and all designers
agreed this season that the parka would play a starring role in
fashion for spring. We all remember parka’s from a year or
two ago when they were strictly army surplus with fur-lined hoods.
Last season they returned in sophisticated fabrics and this year
the parka has well and truly grown up, looking refined, smart and
more lightweight than before.
This is the perfect coat when you want to appear casual but on trend
and polished, never an easy look to pull off but the parka solves
this sartorial dilemma for us in 2007 so is sure to be a big hit.

On the catwalks, parkas came in bright neon colours, in metallic
and shiny high tech nylons and with feminine drawstring pockets,
necklines and blouson sleeves. Expect to see these re produced all
over the British high street this spring.
