Safari

A perennial summer trend, safari chic was brought right up to date for spring summer in London, Paris, New York and Milan, in the shape of modern sleeveless belted jackets, military details on khaki tailoring and feminine utility looks. The resounding message from the catwalks for 2008 was that safari is the new, relaxed way to stay smart come spring.

But this season smart does not equal stiff. Easy tailoring and sporty looks that can be dressed up or down reflected fashion’s new uncomplicated mood, while the appearance of chic modern prints conjured up the spirit of exotic holidays and far away places.

British Fashion Designer of 2007, Stella McCartney, trumpeted the return of safari in her triumphant eco –sexy infused Paris show. Amongst the hippy florals, vegetation and foliage she sent crisp linen safari suits down the catwalk answering every working woman’s question, what will I be wearing to the office this summer? The key to this look is the belt, which creates a feminine silhouette.

Last season’s military theme carried through to spring summer in a pared down version of winter’s key look at Proenza Schouler in New York. Not only were winter’s wools and high tech fabrics replaced with lighter cottons and khaki but military and safari style dresses and jackets marched down the catwalk without sleeves - one of this season’s only major directions when it came to shape. The sleeveless jacket is replacing the blazer for spring summer 2008.  Fear not though, if you don’t want to expose your upper arms, this new shape looks just as striking if you layer a fine cotton long sleeve t-shirt underneath.

This is not the return of teenage, girl band cargo pants; this season’s utility look is safari in its most modern incarnation. Parachute silks, rope details and cropped cotton trousers, which signaled a fresh new alternative to skinny jeans and leggings. Teamed with simple white vests and matching jackets, it’s versatile enough to be worn with flat sandals for day or dressed up with heels at night. Utility is summer’s ultimate capsule wardrobe.

Jungle prints looked chic and sophisticated on the catwalk at Diane Von Furstenberg. This will be the way for curvy, pear and apple shapes to sport the safari vibe if khaki trousers or belted jackets just don’t inspire complete confidence. Jungle immerged in the shape of tropical inspired patterns and foliage prints and came in muted tones, mustards, greens and browns, that are flattering and discreet. Even a simple flash of jungle, under a jacket or cardigan will look fresh and up to date for spring.
