Sporty
Sportswear was back on the agenda at fashion week, with some new rules. Sporty-chic for spring/ summer 09 is luxe, relaxed and bright. Sophisitcated, without a hint of gym class about it
|
It was a case of Land Ahoy! at D&G’s Milan catwalk show in September last year as Dominico Dolce and Stefano Gabanna’s troop of ship mates stormed the runway.
This classic summer look was brought up to date with high wasted trousers and pops of colour in the shape of oversize neon accessories. For 2009 nautical chic is all about what you wear with the iconic nautical staple, the navy and white striped t-shirt.

It seemed like almost every show at fashion week featured a jumpsuit or all-in-one of some description. Some playsuits were short and girlie, while Derek Lam in New York ushered in the most glamorous of all one pieces, the new trouser-gown. This confirmed the jumpsuit as a key piece for the new season , and no matter how hard we tried to ignore the sometimes impractical one-piece, we could not. That’s because no matter age, shape or size there was something for everyone this season. One of the most versatile and wearable was at Bottega Venetta. It had sleeves and a neatly cinched waist, and could almost have passed for a shirt tucked in to trousers – subtle enough even for the most skeptical amongst us

Following on from autumn/winter 08’s obsession with trousers, designers continued to show pants in every incarnation. This summer their favorite was the tapered leg pant. Loose, forgiving, comfortable and cool, this trouser is roomy on the leg and finishes just above the ankle. These will form the basis of your summer wardrobe now. As Nicole Farhi showed, the versatile trouser can be teamed with everything from a cropped jacket for the office, to pretty chiffon blouses, tucked in and teamed with interesting jewelley for nights out. |

Neon hues were everywhere as the spring/summer 09 catwalks reflected two major influences for the new season: colour and the eighties. A pop of neon colour is the easiest way to instantly update any style for spring and nods to the eighties vibe without adopting a look you may have said goodbye to many years ago. Michael Kors mainly black and white show was punctuated with neon hues for grown up women, like this blue shade. Contrasted with black in this sporty-chic dress he confirmed this trend is not just for teens this summer. |
