Androgyny
The newest look for autumn is androgyny. Get ready to
borrow mannish trousers and baggy jumpers from the boys, or rediscover
the seventies in sexy disco -fabulous suits. Expect to see this
theme really taking over the high street come October and continuing
well into the party season in December.
Some designers translated androgyny as a powerful evening
look, referencing ‘le smoking’, a trend first pioneered
by Yves Saint Laurent in 1966.

Elsewhere fantastic mannish suits,
baggy jumpers and striped cotton shirts were created for day. Embrace
this look head on with tooled leather brogues and crisp shirts,
but teaming with ruffle front blouses and stacked heels is the best
way to balance and retain femininity
At Paul Smith appropriately titled ‘men
only’ collection mannish suits were worn with cotton shirts,
cardigans and waistcoats. Although this looks outstanding on the
catwalk it’s important to remember not to be too literal with
this trend. Adding feminine elements is the modern way to wear this
look. Mr Smith himself even said (of the collection) “it’s
important to identify your own personality before coming up with
a look…and I would recommend that nobody takes this look literally
– androgyny doesn’t have to mean a buttoned up shirt
and a blazer” |

At Marni in Milan
wide pleat front trousers were worn with chiffon blouses and glossy
belts. They gave the models a laid back slouchy but still sexy attitude
that a girl can only possess when wearing pants. If you’ve
lived in your jeans for the last 5 years now is the time to rediscover
trousers and the high street have them in abundance for autumn.
Wide cut, with front pleats look good on every body shape, and paper
bag waists are great on girls with smaller waists. |
At Burberry the
mannish tuxedo came in black with satin lapels and was styled with
a traditional frill front dinner shirt. It was an incredibly sexy
and powerful image on the catwalk and has already been worn by celebrities
like Kate Moss and Stella McCartney who like to be unique and stand
out from the crowd. Wearing a well cut, sexy tux, when everyone
else has turned up in a predictable frock will show you have true
fashion credentials. But if you are attempting this look in real
life for the party season – leaves shirts unbuttoned to show
décolletage, keep hair soft and tousled and make up natural
and pretty. You want to look confident not aggressive so high heels
and clutch bags are the best way to finish this look. |

At Gucci in Milan
– designers went out on a limb referencing the disco fabulous
70’s/80’s and sending a multitude of sexy satin pant
suits down the catwalk. Their take on androgyny was by far the sexiest
of the season and will definitely be a big look on the high street.
With challenging themes like layers, volume and grunge to grapple
with over the next 6 months, many of us may find solace in a simple
and instantly sexy disco style look. Sartorially speaking this 70’s
take on androgyny requires zero effort to look good therefore is
sure to be an instant hit this Christmas. |
