fall 2006 fashion trends

This is your Catwalk report for autumn and fall 2006 fashion trends, with pictures taken by top runway photographer Anthea Simms

This season fashion has finally found a new direction and we can celebrate as years of squeezing into skinny jeans, navel baring hipsters and clingy tops (that never seemed quite long enough), are finally over.

How do trends work?

volume modernist androgyny checkmate

No doubt about it a landmark fashion season is upon us and the silhouette that has prevailed for a decade, (hipster trouser and stiletto) is completely phased out - being replaced at last by something looser and less body conscious.

The biggest issue now is volume, as the bubble, the egg and the cocoon are entirely new descriptions for clothing that we’ll all be using this year. Bell sleeves and voluminous smocks continue from summer but most that is soft and pretty disappears as androgynous themes, the new loose fit and modernist tailoring emerge.

At a first glance all this talk of eggs, layers and grunge may fill us with dread, presenting a whole new list of fashion conundrums to work out. But edit carefully and peel back the layers to reveal a slouchy jumper, a smart zippy parka, well cut trousers or a softly rounded skirt, and it becomes clear that getting dressed this autumn has never been so easy
