Volume
Silhouette is THE big story for Autumn Winter 06 with
‘Volume’ playing the starring role. Sure to be a
trend for all shapes and sizes, it provides the opportunity
for us to distort our frames with exaggerated shapes in clothing.
Tulip skirts, egg shaped dresses, puff sleeved blouses and cocoon
coats are set to make the ‘volume trend,’ your new
best friend for the Winter, the only trick is you must get your
proportions right, below we show you how….
|
Let individual pieces do the
talking. This tulip skirt from the ever fashion-forward Topshop,
needs little else in terms of styling, the shape is the style.
Oversized detailing is key, whilst the deep front pleats help
to exaggerate the tulip shape – a great skirt shape to
help create or hide curves on the hip. Teamed simply with a
beautiful blouse, even a handy fine-knit polo-neck jumper for
evening glamour it would work equally well with a crisp white
shirt, black opaque tights and patent platform shoes for a chic
office outfit.

Balloon sleeves shown here
on this Miss Selfridge dress, are an easy way
to inject Volume into an outfit, as with most sleeves this season
you will find either elbow or bracelet length far more flattering.
All press pictures are shot for drama but with this style of
top we recommend fitted trousers.
Avoid being ‘drowned’ by your volume piece by adding
perspective to your silhouette, elbow and bracelet length sleeves
will expose wrists, use a belt to accentuate your waist when
wearing a tulip skirt and keep legs slim with wool or opaque
tights, leggings or cigarette pants - especially when choosing
cocoon and egg shaped coats and dresses. By giving a hint of
your true frame the volume trend can suddenly become super slimming.

Simplicity is thrown out of
the window with this full skirt, ruffle shirt and cocoon shaped
coat from Topshop, however it works because
of the nipped in waist and knee length of the skirt allows the
shape of your leg to be seen, it’s a really great shape
for an hour-glass, again creating balance and proportion to
the silhouette, a tall frame could also carry this off but as
a rule petite shapes should try and avoid cocoon shaped coats,
they are just too heavy for the frame.
The coat would work equally well with wide leg trousers, cigarette
pants and your drainpipe jeans from last season, but remember
to nip in your waist with a great belt and finish off with some
gorgeous stack heeled platforms, avoid dainty shoes.

Finally this bell sleeved jacket
from Wallis (notice the bracelet length) will
be a popular look for this season and grey - officially the
new black for the fashion magazines is a colour that will give
your existing black clothes a pick me up.
Notice the voluminous cut, featuring oversized button detail
on this jacket - look out for single-breasted styles if you
have a fuller bust - it can be worn with anything and will effortlessly
update your wardrobe. Whether smart with tailored wide-leg trousers
for work, chic with sleek cigarette pants or dressed down with
jeans it’s extremely versatile. Again the waist is key,
it would look extra special with a patent wide belt as an alternative,
the long gloves are another essential accessory for winter –
expect to see them all over the high street.
