Urban Deluxe
There was a luxurious vibe in the ether this season as several designers interpreted winter’s powerful mood as the chance to bring back some old fashioned glamour. The new urban deluxe uniform is filled with rich textures and interesting fabrics, jewel tones, sequins and plenty of gloss, without looking unobtainable.
There are trends here that will work just as well in the office as the office party. The look established a clutch of new modern classics worth investing in now, as they are set to be in style for a while. |
The evening blouse is a key piece for your autumn/winter 2008 wardrobe with Proenza Schouler’s high necked pussy bow number drawing gasps of delight from the front row in New York. Possibly the most versatile separate for the new season the Proenza boys showed how easy it will be to do day-to-night, office to party dressing this year.
Teamed with elegantly slouchy black trousers this catwalk look is sophisticated polished and screams modern icon without being in the least bit intimidating for the real woman who might want to flatter not flaunt their curves. |

This season the smart money is on investing in a statement coat. When this jewel coloured, cocoon shaped belted wool cocktail coat glided down Alberta Ferretti’s catwalk – a new modern classic was born. Arguably the queen of goddess dressing, with this coat Ferretti answered the question of what to wear on cold nights out – when a nylon puffa just won’t cut it. |
Nobody does old fashioned glamour like Oscar de La Renta. His tweed skirt suit actually looked as if it had been dipped in gold – what could be more luxurious than that? There was certainly no sign of a recession on his catwalk. While the prices, and practicality of a gold and tweed Oscar de la Renta suit might be out of most women’s reach the ethos of his show was not- and that was, don’t let the credit crunch dampen your style.
Luxe dressing is fun and you’ll look fabulous, so inject a little gold in to your wardrobe this season. |

French fashion house Balmain is having a bit of a moment. Rescued from fashion obscurity by Christophe Decarnin who was appointed Creative Director in 2006, this show was the fashion editors’ favorite in Paris. The stand out piece was this sequined jacket. It summed up the new rules for wearing sequins this season, which were everywhere - securing their place as a huge trend for the coming party season. The message was clear, keep it simple.
Quietly sparkly sequins win over shiny shiny glittery numbers, and keep the rest of your outfit very simple. Let one stand out sequined piece shine. |
