High street fashion: Winter Texture

Photography by Sarah Bowles

The catwalks were full of textured knits, touchy feely fabrics and slinky skins. For your everyday wear, it’s a simple matter of updating your womens outerwear with a chunky knit, a long haired gilet or a sheepskin jacket to show case your ability to put together smooth and mottled, or rugged and shiny. Have some fun bringing in existing items to your wardrobe like leather, wool or suede and mixing all together.

cropped leather jacket

Didi mixes leather, studs and slippery metallics. And carries off the funky- throw-it-all-together effortless look with ease doncha think? The skinny jeans continue this season - you’ve just got to love a pair of strides so versatile that they give a multitude of layering options by cladding thighs reassuringly in a streamlined dark colour.

So for this look let’s see... Start with dark fitted jeans by New Look and add a studded funky biker style boot by Next. Old gold textured top by River Island and cropped leather jacket by New Look. Statement jewellery is still key...see how the eye is drawn to the neckline here and for extra embellishment you could try a studded bag like this one by Topshop.

harem pants

Claire prefers a more voluminous trouser (harem’s incidentally still going strong this season, despite some fashion writers trumpeting their demise now high waisted flares are back.) Your harem pant can be updated with chunky knitwear and a textured top to be given a new spin. See how black looks much more playful with lots of texture and embellishment. You can do it too once you have my tip... the key to combining so many textures is to keep to one neutral colour group. There now that was easy!

For this look: Gothic style, strappy pointy boots by New Look and harem pants by A-Wear are a great combo, then add hero cardigan by A-Wear and textured top by New Look.

gilet

Heather loves her ¾ length gilet and can wear it over everything as a practical outer layer. See how the belt accentuates Heather’s waist by cinching the bulky garment close. Definition is absolutely everything when you have a bulky shape like this gilet to play with, so if you are wearing it closed then pull it in at the waist. It’s a great garment though and can cover all your favourite and existing separates, just showcase your waistline by pulling in with your favourite belt, or wear open of course with a flattering knitted dress underneath to show a streamlined shape.

To put this look together we chose a gilet by Next, belt by Topshop, kick flare trouser by Next and boots by Clarks.

winter coat

Your winter coat choice can embody the texture trend more easily if you want to work this look in to your wardrobe with restraint. Let’s face it not everyone wants to look like a fashion plate!

This soft mohair multicoloured flared coat looks great on Jo and even better with added knee high boots and soft leather bag – even that has texture so don’t miss an opportunity to use your accessories to underline your fashion currency in other ways! If you are a confident dresser then work in other textures and patterns to your heart’s content, a scarf is a great place to start but we’ve opted for a dress which makes a confident statement don’t you think?

We created this look with a statement coat by Hobbs, dress by Mint Velvet, boots by Autograph at M&S, bag by Debenhams and Beret by M&S.
