New Glamour

The designers were clear about one thing this season, the world’s economic gloom should not signal the abandonment of glamour, and the high street adopted this mantra too. But in 2009 this is much more subtle than it has been in previous seasons.

One Shoulder: Oasis
One shouldered dresses are the way to make a statement with evening wear this summer. The asymmetric neckline is so striking there will be little need for jewellery, but if you do want to add shine, earrings will work best, or a stack of diamante or gold bangles. Also remember the rules when revealing any flesh up top – keep the hemline longer below. Oasis have mastered this with their catwalk inspired cocktail dress.

Brights: Jaeger
This summer, if you only follow one of the new fashion rules it should be to try colour and the brighter the better. Jaeger’s pretty dresses are the perfect antidote to black and capture the colourful spirit of spring/ summer 09 without being too loud. If you are still unsure about colour break it up with a black belt as Jaeger have, and team with neutral shoes.

Shine: Ted Baker
Ted Baker has perfectly captured the ethos of Ralph Lauren’s catwalk show; inject simple pieces with an instant shot of glamour. Blouses were transformed into statement pieces once crafted in silk satins or adorned with sequins.
The easiest way to wear the look is by teaming existing wardrobe staples, such as a flattering pair of black trousers with one shiny piece, like this cowl neck, shell top.

If you don’t want to reveal your arms, or before summer really warms up, layer under jackets or cardigans.

Metallic:Oli
If Ms. Prada’s gleaming gold is a summer fashion statement too far, look to Oli for the perfect interpretation of glamourous catwalk style. Pewter is the metallic shade that  tips a nod to the trend without overstating the obvious. It’s more subtle than bright gold or foily silver. In taffeta the uber luxe feel of the Milan catwalk is evident, and while Prada’s subversive, undone crumpled look might not be practical for summer parties, Oli’s flattering v-neck and knee length hem line certainly is. Accessories with beaded metallic strappy sandals and little else.
