Romantic
The international collections ushered in a romantic air for spring, banishing winter’s stiff, structured, trussed up looks to the back of the wardrobe.
Do the same in floaty dresses and Grecian inspired toga’s as spring summer 2008’s essential trend – sheer transparency. It’s a real breathe of fresh air and will have you looking super modern. On the high street, catwalk extremes have been toned down so look out for delicate chiffon blouses and tunics if you want to look right up to date. |
The catwalks ushered in a light romantic mood for spring seen in designer collections filled with ruffles and frills. Off the catwalk these can seem daunting though, as over fussy looks can swamp petite frames and add bulk to fuller figures. Oasis’ delicately ruffled shirtdress is a great way to get the look without looking too frilly. It evokes the spirit of Sonia Rykiel’s standout catwalk show of chiffon clad floating fairies but the simple silhouette and structured belt anchor the look in real life. Lilac was also a key shade for spring summer 2008.

Sheer and transparent pieces are the ultimate way to flash your fashion credentials this spring. The see-through look was one of the freshest summer trends to emerge from the international collections. This easy to wear tunic from Topshop Unique is a key piece echoing the catwalk. It can be worn over jeans or trousers with flats for day or heels and layers of fine gold necklaces for night. And as the season progresses it will prove a vital summer dress or beachside cover up. The key to keeping sheer chic however is not to flash too much flesh. A little bit of see through goes along way.

This season fashion is all about having fun! The message from the catwalks was playful and designers had fun with prints. Karl Lagerfeld’s constellations at Chanel were perhaps the most whimsical, confirming stars as the stellar print for spring 2008. And the best news was, stars will instantly update your look no matter how you wear them. We love this star print dress from Jaeger – as it is versatile enough to be worn as a tunic over jeans or trousers or on it’s own with simple accessories. There’s no need to add much to this stand out print.

The Grecian toga paraded down the catwalk everywhere from Hermes to Lanvin. However it’s one of the easiest looks to pull off even if you’re not a model with a designer budget. Freeman’s simple white maxi dress with gold rope detailing references every ancient beauty from Helen of Troy to Cleopatra. Its forgiving length and neckline will work for everyone –but if you don’t want to show off you’re arms just add a cardi or wrap. Plus the empire line is not only very Hollywood starlet but also totally tummy friendly. Team with summer’s key accessories, a stack of bangles and some gold gladiator sandals for the complete look – though if you need a bit of height wedges work just as well with this wardrobe gem.
