Seventies Colour Block Chic

Prepare to take your wardrobe back to the future via a quick stop off in the 1970s.  The 2011 summer of the ‘70s is all about putting your platforms forward glam disco style. This translates to luxe, languid looks in bejewelled colours and soft, slinky textures. This colour block jumpsuit from River Island has got the trend down with its easy, laid back yet sexy sensibility.

It shows you how you can make this trend work for you by teaming colourful separates – remember lights and brights draw attention to where ever they are placed – with dark (or neutral) pieces if you don’t want to go the whole colour-hog or want to cleverly draw attention away and to certain areas. This trend loves a party so up the ante after-dark with metallic platforms and accessories for that studio 54-vibe.

Get a little shirty…

Some dresses should come with a health warning. With a prescription of a nipped-in silhouette and v neck line that is fabulously flattering especially for curvaceous bodies, plus a cut that is timelessly chic, this dress is a fashion marvel that’ll save you anywhere anytime. Plus it’s anything but bland – the shirt dress is the frock du jour and this version, with its ‘70s inspired tone (yes the ‘70s again!) and slinky swathes is oh so now.

Simply slip it on for high impact with low effort. Heels or flats you decide. See we did warn you: You may get a little smitten.

All rise…the LWD

Nothing says chic and pulled together like a brilliant dress. This lace number from style369.com  in the season’s hottest (non)colour could just well be your passport to summer’s ladylike elegance. Lace? Yes formerly the stuff of tablecloths and doilies, lace is back once again and has truly cemented its chic status. Trust us!

Clean lines are a must this spring/summer and this dress is fresh, crisp and its body skimming lines coolly compliment curves.  Accessorize with a (fake) golden tan and leather accessories to keep it just off snow white.

East is East

F-east your eyes on this beautiful coat from East. Extraordinarily embroidered, it has an instant outfit-smartening ability and will give any look a lift. The pattern detail is an irresistible balance of classic and contemporary which means that it’s an on-trend but that you’ll treasure it for seasons to come.

Its long lean line and curved-in waist also means it’s flattering and enhances natural curves or amplifies more slender shapes. Simply throw over your tailored pieces for a chic, elegant look (a block of darker shades or neutrals underneath will elongate). Or to really head east towards Trendsville, play with other prints, block with brights or do it with denim.

Fruit Bowl Fashion

This season fashion’s gone bananas. Or apples, oranges, lemons… Yes, designers have gone hungry for juicy fruit motifs in mouth-watering shades. You’ll find them on everything from dresses and skirts to blouses and shoes but it is the printed trouser that is the most fashion ripe. Spring is the season of the trouser with palazzo pants and flared legs at the top of the wish list, never mind their thigh-skimming and leg-elongating abilities.

But how to wear print – remember to match body volume to print volume - which roughly translates to - small and petite means restrained and moderate print, curvaceous and fulsome body requires voluptuous print to balance.
And let the trousers do all the work, keeping the rest simple in solid or neutral colours. A tailored jacket will give the look the right amount of structured edge for a relaxed chic look. If you like your look a little fruitier then add in some quirky accessories. They do count towards your five a day after all…
