LATEST FASHION TRENDS

You love the latest fashion trends but you also want practicality!

So in ‘What’s New for January,’ we answer your questions on the latest female fashion trends with our own brand of fashion know how. Subscribers to the newsletter already have a head start on what to buy in the sales to work for next spring, but we don’t buy into any of the latest fashion trends unless they suit our shape.

Once you know what to wear (find out how to dress to suit your body shape) you will then be ready to take on January with style!

This month you asked about freshening up your skinny jeans, wearing black to a wedding and dresses to step out in style. If your question isn’t here then check out ‘Ask Caryn,’ I’ve answered another 10 this month, with links provide to our recommended stores…

Question: “Dear Caryn
I have seen lots of wide leg trousers in the shops on the high street. I have tried on many pairs and just look ridiculous in them. I still have a pair of skinny jeans, which I love wearing with my dresses but apparently they are not trendy anymore. What shall I do? "
Lottie

Hi Lottie
Wide legged trousers are indeed very much on trend this season, but that is not to say that skinny jeans are not. Instead of getting rid of them, why not change what you wear them with on the top half? I suggest you opt for a top that has volume in the sleeve, which is definitely going to work for Spring/Summer and will help to freshen up your jeans.

Question: “Dear Caryn
I am 5ft 2 and size 6 with no waist. I find shopping a nightmare and often end up shopping around for hours with no success, and now I have a friend’s birthday that I have coming up in February and I need to find something to wear for it. I really don’t know where to start and am dreading the whole thing can you help? Also I really don’t like my skinny arms."
Gemma

Hi Gemma
Shopping is hard for most of us. There is so much choice and so little time, which is why it helps to home it down to what you know, will suit your body shape. Empire line and high waisted trousers are great for you as they will elongate your body and give you perceived height. Also try anything with a tie belt as this will pull you in and give you a waist.

As you have skinny arms I suggest that you check out dresses with either bell or puff sleeves especially in a semi sheer fabric such as chiffon. For more advice why not check out my petite e-book where I clearly explain shapes and styles to suit every body shape.

Question: "Hi Caryn
I am going on holiday to the Canary Islands in March. I have clothes from last year that I can take but I want to buy a few more things that I can wear whilst out there. The problem is that at the moment all I can see in the shops is winter sale items! Is there anywhere where I can buy summer outfits now? I hope you can help me."
Fiona

Hi Fiona
In answer to your question the January sales will start to clear away by mid-late January and the Spring Summer range will start to fill shop rails. The good news is that you can buy plenty of clothes on line now. Just visit our online shopping mall.

I do that you buy some lighter knitwear garments, as the evenings can get quite chilly. Try this elegant, nude knitwear dress that you can dress up or down, and it is ideal for packing, as it will not crease easily. It’s also a key colour for the new season! Enjoy your holiday.

Question. “Hi Caryn
I am going to a wedding reception next month and I am not sure what to wear and whether I can get away with wearing black. I also want to buy something that I can wear again, as I don’t have much money left over each month to spend on clothes. I also want something sexy but not too revealing on the front as I have a large bust, 34DD and I am a size 14. Thanks"
Jane

Hi Jane
You can wear black to the reception although I wouldn’t suggest it if you were attending in the day. I personally think it’s is a bit of a dull option on such a delicious occasion and didn’t Victoria Beckham get a bit of a spanking for wearing black to the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Cruise not so long ago? I think you should look at a print that uses black as a base colour but has plenty of vibrancy.

As you do not want to wear anything too revealing you could either try a trouser suit with a colourful blouse that you can button up or down as far as you want to! Alternatively take a look at this dress below. It’s a backless, halter neck with a slight split at the front, so you’ll have sex appeal without showing off too much. And it is dark but not stern. Just remember to invest in a good strapless bra that you can get from any good department store, or alternatively try Figleaves.com

Question. "Hi Caryn
My husband has started to complain that I live in jeans and look too masculine. He is right as I don’t experiment and tend to wear them all the time, as they are easy to put on in the morning. My problem is confidence. Even though you say you are about ordinary women, your site is still very fashion conscious and I just can’t see myself in any of it. Am I wasting my time writing to you?"
Diana

Hi Diana
Sometimes we need to experiment a little. I get the feeling that you have stuck to jeans because you don’t know how to wear anything else. I want you to look at the picture below and think skirts.

The right skirt can be comfortable, practical like jeans but also very womanly. I’m not suggesting a radical change like this season’s Pencil skirt but something that still conforms to your idea of style without you having to step out of your denim comfort zone

The maxi length is on trend this season and will certainly look fab with a roll neck or a piece of knitwear and simple top. You can also dress it up a bit with boots and a little jacket. I think you will find that this will also please your husband!
