I am looking for something that I can go out with the
girls that is sexy but not over the top and definitely
not clingy around the midriff and hip area. I usually
wear t-shirts but think I should change that look. I
am also size 16 and 5ft 3"

Hi Sarah
Why not try a jersey dress which, teamed with a belt
will accentuate your curves. The 80’s are still
in fashion and a one-shoulder top like the picture below
will also give you perceived height. It still has a
soft t-shirt like look to it though and won’t
move you too far out of your comfort zone. If you feel
leggings are too much then go for either slim fit jeans
which will appear more like structured and longer length
leggings, or straight leg jeans, which have a more casual
feel. Team with your fave footwear flats or heels and
you are good to go.

Question: “Hi Caryn
Can you suggest a jacket that I can wear this summer?
I get cold in the evenings and need something that looks
good and is comfy. I don’t want to wear something
that is too fitted as I don’t have a waist and
hate my wide arms."

Hi Helen
Jackets such as denim or cord are great for the summer
but are usually fitted, so what I suggest is something
like a piece of lightweight knitwear, which can be smart
and comfortable to wear as well as practical. Marks
and Spencer have crochet knitwear (very on trend); it
has bell sleeves so it will give your upper arms great
balance. This shape of sleeve is one of the many clothing

Question: "Dear Caryn
I am almost 55 years old and am celebrating my silver
wedding anniversary in a month’s time. My husband
is doing all the arrangements for a big party where
we are going to re-new our vows so I want to make an
effort to look stunning for him. I am a typical pear
shape with big hips, waist and 34C. I would really love
to wear a dress, any ideas? "

Congratulations on your anniversary! You should check
out places like Monsoon and Debenhams who offer a great
selection of bias cut tops, skirts and dresses that
are perfect for your pear shape. Also a favourite of
mine at the moment is Country Casuals, who have updated
their look recently and have a fabulous selection of
designs, I have found that bias cut dresses, especially
with a cowl neck are great to help diffuse and distributed
weight evenly, such as the dress below worn by my former
co-presenter of the BBC’s Clothes Show Selena

Question. “Hi Caryn
I am fed up with wearing black trousers and jeans. I
know white trousers and jeans are in fashion but they
get filthy so quickly on me I don’t think they
look good. Please advise. Oh yes and one other problem
I am also 6ft tall! "

It’s not a problem at all. Love your height –
you are a supermodel my leggy diva. Black trousers and
jeans are great as a staple but yes it’s great
to ring the changes. You say you don’t think white
jeans look good, but have you tried a pair with a longer
length bold print top or tunic. (It’s usually
the bottom and pocket area that attracts the dirt).
Protect this area and keep them looking fresh and white.
However, if you are still not convinced why not try
a bolder colour to go with the bold prints on trend
such as this bootleg red jean. I’m loving these
and the are going to be so versatile – I promise
you will be wearing them all summer and on into the

I hate wearing vests in the summertime and want to know
if you can suggest something that covers my shoulders
and is loose fitting around my hips. I also don’t
want to wear a sack. "

The great alternative to tight fitting t-shirts and
vest is the slouchy t-shirt, not too fitted and definitely
not a sack! Choose one with capped sleeves that will
flatter the tops of your arms and go for a darker colour
to really hide those extra pounds. Finally wear with
long beads to add a touch of glamour.
