Autumn and Fall Fashion Trends
Welcome to ‘What’s New for November’
here at How To Look Good.
This month we are continuing with your questions
on autumn fashion and fall fashion trends. Choosing
clothes to flatter your shape is crucial for your self-confidence.
It’s not just about the latest fashion trends
but whether these latest fashion styles for women seen
in fashion magazines will really suit your body shape.
Once you are in the know about the strongest
commercial themes and you have all the fashion advice
you need (find out how
to dress to suit your body shape) you will then
be ready to take on the cooler weather with style!
Take a look at our ‘catwalk’
section featuring the latest fashion trends in UK, as
well as those from New York, Paris and Milan.
Then move
on to ‘High Street’ to see how your local stores have interpreted the look
to suit your style and budget.
Here are my answers to your individual questions
with our recommendations of what to buy for your individual
shape…

Question: “Hi Caryn
I have to wear a suit for work and want to buy a new
one that I can wear out after work and look fashionable
without being over the top for my job. I am 33 and have
a 32DD chest."
Thalia
Hi Thalia
This winter wide leg is popular style in the shops.
Wide leg trousers are not only very fashionable but
also the shape I would recommend to balance your body
symmetry. Once you have your basic suit, you can wear
it with a variety of tops but always choose a neckline
that will elongate your neck and minimize your bust.
A single-breasted jacket is best for you; avoid a double-breasted
jacket at all costs.

Question: “Hello,
I have seen in a lot of magazines that knitwear dresses
are in fashion. I haven’t time to shop and wondered
if you could recommend one to me? I have a small budget
and have a curvy shape."
Diana
Dear Diana
Stella McCartney took the lead this season with her
easy to pull on knitwear dresses and all the high streets
have followed suit. Knitwear dresses are great for layering
over opaque tights, leggings or jeans and great for
a day or evening look. As you are curvy I would suggest
an a-line style and opt for a subtler colour such as
grey or black – these colours are especially popular
this season.

Question: "Hi Caryn and team
I am organizing the Christmas party at work and already
panicking about what outfit to wear. I know that it’s
a good 6 weeks away but I always find it a struggle
to get anything that looks good on me. I’m size
16 with a pot belly."
Sue
Hi Sue
Can’t believe it’s that time of the year
again!
It’s good to plan ahead and avoid the crowds that
flock to the shops closer to December. Christmas outfits
are just starting to appear in the high street and they
will always sell the latest version of “the little
black dress” that appear every year in a variety
of styles. I would suggest that you opt for an empire
line as this will flatter your apple shape and give
you perceived height. Keep the dress simple and don’t
opt for a high necked dress, instead chose a scoop neck
or v-neck. Jasper Conran has designed a range for Debenhams
that includes a fabulous dress that has a draped detail
on the front that would also hide your tummy.

Question. “Hi Caryn
I am looking for a winter coat that is not too expensive.
I am tall, 5ft 11 and quite skinny and find a lot of
coats look awkward on me so I need your help."
Katie
Hi Katie
No problem. There are a lot of great styles to suit
your shape. You could go for a 60’s inspired double
breasted pea coat or alternatively try a 50’s
style coat, that has a tie belt to show off the waist.
Finally opt for a bright colour as this will also help
to add volume to your body and will give you less of
a straight up and down look. In fact you are the best
shape to really enjoy the volume trend in coats this
season. Don’t forget there is a special section
devoted to tall body shapes in our shopping
mall.

Question. "Dear Caryn
I love going for walks, especially in autumn and want
something that will keep me warm. I always loved the
gilet and have enjoyed it for the last few seasons,
however mine is looking old and in need of an update.
I’m wondering whether this look might be a bit
dated now but if not who is doing them this season?
"
Anne
You know what Anne, everyone did layering from Marc
Jacobs to Paul Smith and the Gilet is a perfect garment
for layering. So if you want to update your trusty gilet,
pull it over a chunky cable knit (very this season)
and wear with loose trousers stuffed into boots with
thick socks peeping over the edge of the boot. To finish
off add a knitted floppy hat and oversized scarf. The
thing is, functional clothing looks far more stylish
than any old piece of frippery that has been deemed
‘in’ by the fashion editors and the gilet
is a case in point – what else could do the job.
I hope that sorts it for you, now for part two of your
query. Boden are my best steer for the gilet you need
and here’s a link to take you straight there.
