Question: “Dear Caryn
I am preparing for the cold and wet winter! I already
have a heavy black coat that I brought last winter in
the Sale, so I am looking for something lighter to wear
for now in the colder evenings that I can also stuff
into my big bag that I have recently bought.
Thanks"
Tina
Hi Tina
The parka/mac is very much on trend for autumn and will
not only look stylish but are also very lightweight
and can easily roll up into the big bags that have become
so fashionable. Dress it up as they have done with a
crochet black hat – a stylish heat installator!

Question: “Hi Caryn
I want to buy a new suit and want something that is
also modern and fashionable. I am limited in that (a)
I have to wear a dark suit to work (b)I am 5ft 11 and
(c) a size 16/18 and (d) 34FF. Last time I went out
I got so depressed as I spent the whole day shopping
and brought nothing. Please help!"
Esther
Hi Esther
Tailoring is big for Autumn/Winter, in particular 1940’s
fashion... A lot of the retailers are now doing longer
lengths in sizes up to 18/20 (Marks and Spencer, DP’s,
Next etc) and all cater for the office worker who wants
quality and style.
Colour wise there are going to be many dark grey and
black suits around. What I suggest for your figure is
a bootleg trouser and wear with a single breasted jacket.
The bootleg trouser will slim your legs and the single
breasted jacket will flatter your breasts.
To stay ahead of the trends, invest in a tonal waistcoat,
which is excellent for pulling in your waist and teamed
with an alternative coloured shirt will look extremely
stylish. For drinks after work you can finish this look
off with a pair of brightly coloured shoes such as red
or pink

Question: "Hi Caryn
I loved the smocks and wore them a lot with jeans all
Summer, they were great for me as I am petite size 8.
What is similar that I can buy to update my wardrobe
for winter?"
Lisa
Hi Lisa
Yes smocks were great as a trend this summer and everyone
was wearing them as they are good for adding volume
for petites (like you) and covering curves for fuller
figures. Moving forward the main look for autumn is
to see the smock replaced with A-line shapes especially
in dresses. For extra warmth wear a fine knit jumper
underneath, with opaque tights and boots.

Question. “Hi Caryn
I have recently had a baby and I am looking for a dress
that I can wear both for post maternity and when I return
to my normal figure. I don’t like prints or bright
colours but also don’t want to look boring. Please
advise."
Thanks, Jo
Hi Jo
The best shape for you to wear is A-line which is great
for covering curves. Choose a fabric that is light and
not too heavy such as fine knitwear. You don’t
have to wear all over colour but instead go for something
such as the dress below by Marks and Spencer that has
colour only in the trim. The black base is obviously
flattering and can be worn over leggings for extra comfort.
Wear flat pumps to finish off the look.

Question. "Dear Caryn
I live in trousers as I don’t like my legs and
in particular my big thighs. My friends say that I should
start wearing skirts more, I would love to but I don’t
know where to start. Although I did buy a long peasant
style skirt when they were really trendy, but I think
they drown me. I am aged 25"
Cher
Hi Cher
You are young so you can take most trends. You say you
hate your thighs, well the good thing about skirts are
that they generally cover this area. All you have to
avoid is the mini skirt. A good quality black pencil
skirt worn with a colourful waisted belt can hide this
area and highlight your waist. It’s about taking
the emphasis away by clever use of shape and colour.
This autumn there are a lot of skirts around, because
of the 1940’s fashion trend, so pencils are in
and so are A-line skirts which I think are particularly
fresh and fun for winter and the added volume in the
skirt will slim down your thighs and direct eyes to
your waist. Boden have a great one that sits on the
knee which look great with a pair of high boots. Perfect
for you so no excuses to you friends!
