Since the movie is out tonight and we will be going just so we could say we were across Carrie Bradshaw’s looks, I thought some simple summer Carrie homage would be in order. But not because ‘I just love her style’.
Actually I love Carrie’s relationship with drama, colour and proportion. I confess, I’m not a fan of stylist Patricia Field’s vision for this fictitious female lead, but I truly love the resulting spectacle.
In fact ‘Carrie watching’ is the best armchair sport I can think of. Some of her get ups look fantastic but she’s also scored more own goals than most, with her wiggy leggings, fussy shoe and skirt combos and overblown blouse, cardi and corsage compilations.
And I love expressing my incredulity to any members of the family, watching SATC re-runs on Paramount with me. But that’s the point!
Carrie Bradshaw’s style is a reminder that if we so choose we can use clothes to make the most opulent of entrances and the most pompous of exits (there’s nothing like swinging a wrap over your shoulder as you turn to leave, baring your back and your gleaming stiletto heels like teeth).
You too can create an attention seeking ensemble and have others silently mouthing ‘what is she wearing now.’ But you know what? CB, has got something hasn’t she! Retailers are already cashing on some of the looks featured in the film, putting their money on the items she has modelled I mean worn in various scenes. Expect to see the copy of a certain Proenza Schouler waistcoat in your favourite store and when you do buy it.
I am a big waistcoat fan, as you know from a recent ‘This week I am mostly wearing…’ post. They are perfect for waist definition and give a great tailored finish to a more formal look whilst being perfectly adaptable for jeans and even look great when worn open over tunics.
The rumour up my end of town, is that Pat Fields has already been snapped up by M&S for to create special range, so how about getting you some of that early? Yes I’ve found this rather marvellous dress from one of my favourite and perfectly sane retailer favourites Boden. For £95 this silk dress is perfect a ‘Carrie Classic.’
Wear with chunky-heeled tan sandals, a retro style cardigan and make that entrance girlfriend!
